INTRODUCTION

are destined to go to their graves without telling and in particular recording their stories in part and specially in totality.
A conventional written biography or autobiography could not possibly do justice to the holistic philosophy, principles and practices that have so profoundly shaped, guided and infused my life.
When I decided to compile my life story in 2015, I wanted to do something different and searched for a neologism I could use. I decided that the term CO-BIOGRAPHY would be holistically aligned with the iconoclastic and maverick life path I have so passionately and mindfully chosen to embrace.
The idea was not a conventional type written book or manual but rather, a “multimedia smorgasbord” narrative that would combine and integrate both my own personal Autobiography with a short conventional Biography written by a professional biographer.
I viewed it essentially as a GRAND GESTURE OF GRATITUDE AND GRACE to God, Life, Source or whatever term you might like to use in this context.
It would contain a plethora of anecdotes, songs, interviews, stories, letters, articles, excerpts from movies, professional and popular publications, high and low lights, turning points, memories, mistakes, achievements, videos, music, and photographs. Like my life itself I wanted it to be large, bold, creative, factual, courageous and totally authentic. I was given the great advice to capture my Co Biography in a new website format that would replace the Aahalearning website I had used very effectively and successfully for many years. I view this as my final personal and professional life assignment.
Using this format would incorporate holistic indexing and cross referencing allowing quick and easy access to virtually any moment, memory, chapter, experience or episode in my life.
In the process of joyfully immersing myself in this life affirming shaping, cutting and polishing of past experiences, memories and happenings, I have come to the realization with increasing conviction, that going to ones grave without in some or other way, telling and sharing our story, is arguably an act of slothfulness, a poor excuse, an intra and interpersonal tragedy and a significantly missed opportunity both personally and collectively
Sadly the very common practice of written life stories presented in biographical or auto biographical format, has been largely restricted to high profile individuals, hero’s or celebrities ranging from monsters to angels and everything in between. Publicity, newsworthiness and perceptions of what is important are the driving factors. Of course few would dispute the universal recognition and acceptance that story telling has the potential to entertain, enthrall, amaze, shock, inspire and/or teach us something. I really believe that “stories” patiently await being told and shared and that everyone has value and benefit in some or other way.
A question you may like to ponder before diving into my life is the following:
How much do you REALLY KNOW AND UNDERSTAND about the what, how, when, where and why of the life and times of just ONE PERSON dead or alive who you have known, loved and admired ? My bet is that like me, you will have to admit to yourself that at BEST you know very little about anyone even those with whom you may have shared a lifetime.
How I would have loved and valued it if my beloved mother, estranged father and esteemed mentor Professor Phillip Tobias to name just 3 significant people in my life had done what I am doing now. I want to weep knowing that they all went to their graves as most do, with their stories very largely untold, unshared and shrouded in secrecy.
I and everyone else whose lives were touched and shaped by these 3 people are almost certainly the poorer for this. Arguably a detailed sharing of our life story should be at the top of our bucket lists.
I am committed to not repeating the untold stories of those who have gone before me.
Compiling my Co-Biography has convinced me of 4 things:
- Firstly that LIVING by the grace of a omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent Divine Intelligence gifted to us from God, Life, Source or whatever you perceive this to be, constitutes ONE side of our “earth walk coin”
- Secondly the other side of the coin is our reciprocated gift back to Source. Ideally this should be characterized by acts of Love, Kindness and Service to ourselves and everything in our sphere of influence.
- Thirdly that every significant person that has crossed my path has been a colour and learning filled thread in the tapestry of my life for which I am hugely grateful beyond words.
- Fourthly that compiling ones life story is a very effective way of preparing for the inevitable process of entering the arc of our own disappearance or put in another way, conscious dying.
Story telling has the potential to entertain, enthrall, amaze, shock, inspire and/or teach us something. It is worth remembering that EVERY LIFE, with it’s many experiences and happenings are actually a multitude of different stories. I believe every story patiently awaits being told and shared and the only debatable issue is the intra and inter personal “value add “ of telling and hearing a story.
I am committing mysef to not being silent about my life stories as so many others have and will fail to do.
I am hoping and trusting that this little explanation will get you pondering the huge benefits of writing your own life story. One thing you might need reminding of is that if our paths have crossed and irrespective of how long or short we have walked this path, YOU in some of other way have shaped and influenced and for this my cup runneth over with appreciation and gratitude

Autoethnography Meaning
Autoethnography is a term that refers to a specific methodological research approach and strategy that incorporates a systematic analysis of personal experience/s within a particular cultural context.
An autoethnographer is first and foremost, a communicator and a storyteller. They strive, struggle and attempt to figure out and understand in greater detail and depth, their triumphs and challenges, how they lived, what they did and should have done and how to live in the present and in the future .
In essence autoethnography is a story that re-enacts experiences through which we seek to discover MEANING. When this is achieved, the writer is able to more deeply and expansively understand and appreciate their many past life experiences and adventures.
For example when faced with the death of a loved one, we might wonder how we could continue living without this person and even question how God could have allowed this to happen. Over time when looking back at the experience, we may understand that through this hardship we became a stronger more independent and resilient person and/or grew closer to other family members. With these realizations, we have actually made sense and most importantly, we have found meaning in what happened ….it is in this unfolding revelation, that autoethnography occurs.
The autoethnographer and the audience have equal weight.
Through the writers portrayal of self, the opportunity is created for an embodied experience for both the writer and the reader. There is an inward and outward experience of ethnography in experiencing the subjectivity of the author. The reader may inwardly experience the work of ethnography through reading, seeing and hearing and then have an outward reaction to this through thinking, feeling and behaving.
Autoethnography is also a component used in documentary films. It differs from a documentary in that its subject is actually the writer or filmmaker. Because an autoethnography typically relates to the subjective life experiences and thoughts, views and beliefs of the story teller, it is often rife with bias and image manipulation. Unlike film documentaries, autoethnographies do not usually make claims of objectivity. I would like to point out however in closing this introduction, that my scientific and research background compelled me to create a very different and alternative Autoethnography.
Firstly it would be in MULTI-MEDIA format and not just a written report and secondly, it would strive to balance and integrate factual cognitive accuracy and objectivity with radically authentic and honest no holds barred subjective truth telling.
In conclusion let it be known that this Autoethnography has been unashamedly compiled largely for myself. I have spent more than 6 years putting this “big picture” jig saw puzzle of my life together.
In this very personal and passionate final major life assignment, I have learnt more than I could ever have imagined was possible. Unquestionably my biggest and most humbling insight was this … I initially believed my life story was going to be a compilation of the many varied pieces I had personally and largely independently, created and designed on my life path. What I discovered however was something very different….my life in fact had been hugely influenced, shaped and directed by invisible forces such as God, destiny and providence and particularly and very significantly, by PEOPLE who had crossed my path. Without them I could not have lived and with different people, my life would have been totally different. Only when I had this epiphany, did I understand with crystal clarity, why I had to write my Autoethnography Firstly, as a heartfelt, grand gesture of gratitude to GOD, LIFE or SOURCE. Secondly, in deep appreciation and acknowledgment for the many, many PEOPLE and EXPERIENCES that significantly shaped, guided and supported my life. Thirdly, for the way in which all of the above enabled me to discover and fully embrace the MEANING and PURPOSE of my short earth walk. Fourthly, the totally unattached possibility and potential that anyone interested in hearing my story, could in some or other way, be inspired, enlightened and/or benefitted. …..
Am hoping that my little explanation will get you pondering the huge benefits of writing your own life story. If you happen to be someone who has crossed my path in some or other way for a long or short time, know thatYOU have touched my life in meaningful ways and for this I am deeply grateful.
This thought provoking North American Indian teaching story is a potent reminder to us all, of the critical importance of MEMORIES and their quintessential role in our human beingness.
If it is true that every person has a huge QUANTIFIABLE PAST that is LARGER than anything in their lives and that if we don’t remember the paths we have travelled and how we came to the place we are at now, both as a society but especially as a person, WE ARE LOST, this raises an important question worthy of our consideration…..”Is an “unexamined life worth living” ?
Examining our life requires time, energy and focus and some might argue that rather than examining our lives we should get on with the business of just living our lives given our short earth walks. Examining our lives is qualitative while living our lives is quantitative. In my opinion what we need is a holistic BALANCE between the two in order to OPTIMISE our living, learning, loving, working and playing. This Autoethnography is my heartfelt attempt at doing just this.
If we fully grasp the huge significance and value of MEMORIES in our lives, we would be prepared to go way beyond the common and superficial practices of occasionally looking at photos in albums, watching family videos and retelling memorable stories. Skillfully and expansively exploring and analysing our memories or living presences, can catalyse deep healing, gratitude and understanding of our past, present and future.”
Welcome to AAHA Learning!
There are simpler and more eloquent ways to live, learn, work, and play in spite of the fact that this is not apparent in the modern world today. This is achieved through increased levels of awareness, attention to detail, and a heightened sense of life’s deep harmony, interconnectedness, order, and beauty.
We experience and manifest this through selfless service when our words and actions make the world a better place, when we are being creative, truly authentic with ourselves and others, and when we are passionately learning, living, and loving.
By simply aligning ourselves with the way life naturally works, we automatically tap into the quantum world and its underlying timeless holistic principles and practices and cultivate and develop the skills we require.
These principles and processes work everywhere and at all times because they are universal dynamics shared by all living things.
OUR MISSION IS TO PASSIONATELY ENCOURAGE AND ASSIST PEOPLE TO TAKE THIS ROAD LESS TRAVELLED AND TO TRUST THAT ONCE ON THIS PATH, THEY WILL REALISE IT IS THE ONLY ROAD WORTH TRAVELLING
Who we used to be
Since 1989, AAHA Learning and associates have created extraordinary holistic edutainment learning adventures for tens of thousands of people from different cultures, races, religions, ages and genders throughout South Africa, neighboring countries, Scandinavia, UK, Europe and Australia.
In September 2013 Dr Bruce Copley the founder and Director of AAHA Learning mindfully and very gratefully decided to close the chapter on his 24 years of Corporate Consulting.
Instead of going into Retirement and getting ” tired” again and again, he went into what he calls”ReFirement” This delightful and uncommon practice involves an ongoing process of getting “fired up” again and again. Since 2013 he has continued to offer his unique services sparingly to Educational Institutions, NGO’s and Festival and special events organizers.

Music, Drumming, Rhythm, Dance and Song
The healing power of music is evident when people are transformed into a tribe of foot-stomping, hand-clapping, whistling and singing participants with shining eyes and smiling faces.
The age old custom of communal music making provides an enjoyable and integrated learning experience to better understand such things as non-verbal communication, synergy, chaos, creativity, altered states of consciousness, stress release and letting go.
Rhythm and music are universal languages that all can feel and understand.
Customized Weddings, Ceremonies and Rituals

Personal Mastery
- Managing Relationships
- Empowerment: Optimizing Human Potential
- Lessons from the Original Fire
- Exploring the Wilderness Within
- Motivation: Living with Purpose and Passion
- Lessons from Nature and the Natural Order
Managing Relationships
Living and learning in the fire of human relationships is essentially about balance. With regard to the fire the closer the hotter, the further away the colder. Successful customer service is about the right balance. This all important business relationship requires constant attention and adjustment simply because both parties are continually changing. The balance between internal and external customer service is important and is a major focus in this intervention.
Empowerment: Optimizing Human Potential
Empowerment is simply the manifestation of our unique and innate abilities and aptitudes. While we cannot in reality empower others we can create circumstances and opportunities that allow them to take back their own power. Previously disadvantaged/handicapped people in particular need to be given these opportunities. Personal mastery is an essential part of the empowerment process and features prominently in this intervention.
Lessons from the Original Fire
A unique and mysterious experience for individuals and groups… a chance to step back in time and experience what our ancestors valued above all… the power of the ORIGINAL FIRE. Master a skill that is 1.5 million years old! Those who have kindled their own original fire discover memorable links between this magical alchemical process and important endeavours such as:
personal mastery
community building
creativity
leadership
transformation and synergy
FIRESHOPS – FOR GROUPS OF UP TO 500 include:
Activities customised to the client’s needs.
Central boma fire lighting, fire circles and dances, candle ceremonies, sweat lodges, etc.
A team building exercise in which each person plays a specific role in the fire creation.
Fun activities in which groups/individuals are given specific challenges and objectives.
Looking for an unforgettable and different experience?
Internationally acclaimed holistic educator, speaker and presenter Bruce Copley uses the fire making experience as an UNFORGETTABLE learning tool. In his unique fireshops for corporate groups and individuals, participants birth their own original fire, using the ancient stick friction technique used for thousands of years by indigenous people.
Making the original fire is a hand and heart warming art that is both fun and immensely satisfying. Those who have kindled their own original fire discover memorable links between this magical alchemical process and important endeavours such as personal mastery, community building, creativity, leadership, transformation and synergy, in ways that conventional approaches are unable to do.
Bruce’s expertise as a fire creator and keeper has sparked a keen interest in preserving forgotten cultures from ancient times. He is even teaching modern San Bushmen whose use of matches/lighters has deprived them of this skill, how to make the original fire. Bruce has adapted this ancient skill and designed a captivating ‘hands-on’ FIRESHOP that is receiving rave reviews all over the world. Indigenous people are hand making original fire kits for sale that are working replicas of the fire making tools used by the Bushmen.
There is a growing demand for fire kits that are proving to be very popular with our corporate gifts and mementos for launches, conferences, indabas and parties.
Whether you’re 7 or 70, the first wisp of nostril biting smoke magically brings to light visions of our prehistoric ancestors excitedly coaxing flames from wood twirled embers.
Exploring The Wilderness Within
Wake up to your dream instead of an alarm clock ! Imagine…
Your very own private safari camp for a never to be forgotten soul safari
Exploring the wilderness on foot – a journey of mind, body and spirit
Fireside story telling and reconnecting with your ancestors as you create your own fire
Discovering the African night sky and night vision safaris
5 star luxury accommodation in the African bushveld
This SOUL SAFARI LEARNINGSHOP has the extraordinary ability to serve as the cement that bonds the fragmented bricks of your life experiences into a magnificent temple – YOU !
Motivation: Living with Purpose and Passion
While motivation is often an ‘outside-in’ process (extrinsic) it is our contention that an ‘inside-out’ process (intrinsic) is much more effective and permanent. Discovering what we are called to do rather than compelled to do guarantees involvement that is purposeful, passionate and permanent. This intervention creates experiences that serve as a catalyst for such insights. The aim is to become as motivated about your job as you are about your favourite hobby or pastime.
Lessons from Nature and the Natural Order
Some of our greatest teachers are living in our own gardens!
Spending time in nature and perceiving and exploring the natural order with all your senses, is a calming, healing and stimulating experience that can add life to our years and years to our life.
Discover the soul of the natural order through the soles of your feet!
Creativity and Play
Creative Thinking and Acting
As children we were naturally curious, playful, persistent and adventurous. These are essential qualities for creative and innovative thought and action, which can be rekindled and developed through whole person activities and experiences. Delegates recognise that innovation starts with an ‘I’.
In Celebration of Play
Play as both an attitude and a practice is the foundation for learning, creativity, sensitivity, co-operation and balanced living. In this intervention delegates rediscover their joy and rewards of playful working, learning and living.
Learning to Play … Playing to Learn
If you have always imagined this for yourself, now is the perfect time to explore the wonderful world of the dolphin!
Dare to join these magnificent creatures on a delightful journey that will catapult you into an unforgettable rendezvous with life.
Business and Organizations
Business Principles and Practices
Accessing Holistic Intelligence in Business
Using a variety of novel holistic experiences and exercise delegates are given valuable and practical insights into business related concepts such as entrepreneurship, imports/exports, trade/industry, service excellence, performance management, economic growth, business by responsibility, the energy of money, etc.
Move from Systems THINKING to Systems DOING
The Learning Organization
The greatest obstacle to human growth and development is not poverty, illness or illiteracy but rather our inability to learn, unlearn and relearn. Our unique holistic approach significantly enhances individual and collective learning in both the short and long term. We believe that to know and not to do, is not to know.
Transformational Leadership
The holistic leader is someone who is skilled facilitator, a sensitive mediator, an intuitive listener and a wise mentor. Such persons continually strive for excellence not perfection and for balance not specialisation.
Communication
- The Art and Science of Authentic Communication
- Storytelling in Organizations
- Creating and Maintaining a Workplace Community
The Art and Science of Authentic Communication
This involves a participative and fun-filled experience of all forms of communication such as verbal, visual, tactile and intuitive. Multi-sensory awareness exercises greatly enhance our ability to hear, see and feel how we and others communicate.
Storytelling in Organizations
Storytelling is a universal form of communication, which is magic because it engages, inspires and informs people. We listen until we hear where the magic has gone and then use our unique holistic approach to make it come back.
Creating and Maintaining a Workplace Community
This is a much more sophisticated and holistic version of the conventional team building intervention. In a workplace community people communicate authentically and skillfully, learn how to learn co-operatively and work collectively, relate with love and respect, explore alternative ways of thinking and planning and learn how to pace themselves and avoid burnout. In the modern world organisations and companies need much more than intelligent individuals and task focused teams.
Bruce Copley Learningshops, based on timeless principles and practices of Ubuntu, give participants a first hand experience of how a team or collective can become a vibrant community. The transformation occurs when, in the mirror of each human soul, the collective finds its reflection, and the virtue and diversity of every individual comes alive and is valued.
Aspects covered include:
– Communicate openly, skillfully and authentically
– Learn how to learn collectively and cooperatively
– Constructively and creatively manage conflict
– Relate with love and respect and bridge differences with integrity
– Become intrinsically motivated and more productive
– Learn how to pace oneself and avoid burnout
– Explore alternative ways of thinking, imaging and envisioning
Here is Peter Block’s feedback on our mutual involvement:
‘Bruce and Barbara embody the healing and transformative power of song, sound and rhythm. They make this accessible to every human being. Their work is like no other I have ever seen and I have been using music in my community work for ever. They engage us in a way that transcends whether we think we can sing, dance, or carry a beat. It is about connecting our breath, our listening, the clap of our hands with all others around us. Bruce has a way of naming the meaning of sound and song that allows us to enter the music in a new way. The cello in Barbara’s hands brings us into contact with our humanity in all of its joy and sorrow. Irresistible. Both are fine musicians, but that is not the point. It is who they are, their generosity and their commitment to the quality of our experience that is their gift.’
